Though women should be celebrated year-round, March 8 is International Women’s Day. Women contain multitudes: they’re mothers, daughters, sisters, teachers, artists, engineers, scientists, and more. And yet, women still face marginalization and hardships all over the world, from equal pay issues and workplace discrimination to street harrassment and difficulty getting adequate healthcare. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #EachForEqual, which strives to celebrate women’s individuality while also calling for full equality for all.

International Women’s Day has a storied history: it was first formally celebrated in 1911, but has origins as early as 1908, when thousands of women marched through the streets for voting rights and better treatment in the workplace. An official Women’s Day was proposed as a way for women, particularly working-class and marginalized women, to both celebrate themselves and demand better treatment in all components of life. Over a century later, it’s still going strong.

Unlike bigger holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day, International Women’s Day isn’t necessarily known as a gifting holiday. However, it is a day to celebrate the women in your life, and one way to do that is with a thoughtful, unique gift. Why not? Even if your friend or sister seems like she has everything, a small token of appreciation is sure to put a smile on her face.

Of course, there’s no universal gift for women, but here are some ideas to get you started. Something like a blanket and mug set or basket of wine, cheese, and fresh fruit can help her feel pampered or relaxed.

Or, remind her of her achievements with a “lady boss” pin. For the jewelry lover, this women's empowerment rose charm is subtle and stylish, and these earrings channel the divine feminine.

The color associated with International Women’s Day is purple, so perhaps consider a bouquet of purple roses, or a relaxing lavender spa set.

Since this day isn’t traditionally associated with gifting, it can be a lovely surprise for that special woman in your life to receive something equally special on March 8. SmartGift’s instant digital delivery can help with that. Text your friend a link to a gift instead of (or alongside) a meme, or make your coworker’s day by sending them a Slack message that leads to a gift instead of one arguing about where to go for lunch. Plus, they can always customize it if they want, making sure their gift is totally perfect.
